I started the day at Barnegat Light to watch the sunrise and see what birds I could find around. I had some luck with a cooperative Herring Gull and a few Song Sparrows along with a Brown Thrasher in some gorgeous morning light. I met a few people that I had only known from online so it was nice to put faces to the names.
Next I met up with another person I had talked to a bunch but never met. He was taking me to a Common Tern nesting colony in the bays of central New Jersey. We paddled out and started with a nice group of Great Black-backed Gulls then moved on to the Common Terns. It was really amazing to see so many of these terns hovering over the grasses in the light winds. There were also a lot of Laughing Gulls nesting in the same area so I got to photograph a few of them as well. It was quite the experience and you can see some behind the scenes video of the entire day below.
Once done with the terns I went to another spot to scout a Prothonotary Warbler that I'd been working with for a while. Surprisingly I was able to get a couple of decent photos of Northern Parula and Pine Warbler, along with seeing the Prothonotary again which is always nice. It was a really fun day of wildlife photography and below are some of my favorites from the day.
