Length: 3 hours
Easy Difficulty: Limited hiking mainly on paths, standing shooting.
Both Prairie and Blue-winged Warblers are gorgeous yellow birds. The Prairie with its bold black streaking on its face and flanks and spot of rusty brown on the back and the Blue-winged featuring its namesake blue-gray wings and bold eye line, they both are wonderful to see in person. Join me in one of the very few areas in southern New Jersey where they both live in proximity and you will be able to see and photograph them on the same morning. With a unique low brush habitat, phragmite reeds, small pines and other fresh growth you will have a lot of opportunity to get great shots of both of these species.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
We will be walking along paths on level ground in southern New Jersey. This location is not far from the parking area.
Fast moving birds that don’t stay still for very long. Having the ability to quickly find the subject in the frame as well as acquire focus fast is helpful.
With mostly low growth habitat you will be able to see the birds more at eye level than in a normal forest setting.
Learning the calls of the species we are after so you can identify them yourself and find them in the future.
Lenses from 300mm to 600mm recommended
Monopod or tripod unless you can hand hold your rig. I recommend a monopod for easier and faster movement.
It will be tick season so I recommend wearing clothing with insect repellent or I wear clothes sprayed with Permathrin
WHAT I WILL PROVIDE:
3 hours of wildlife photography instruction tailored for warbler photography in this habitat. Seeking out nice perches and clean backgrounds and taking advantage of lighting.
Suggestions on compositions and creative ways to photograph these birds.
I will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding camera settings or techniques.
